Thank you for joining the Kalmyk Youth Coalition’s Spring Workshop! Modeled after our previous multi-day conferences, Kalmyk Youth Coalition hosted a 1-day seminar-style event In Philadelphia on April 20th, 2024. It was attended by 47 people - aged 6 years old to 73 years old.

This event featured workshops catered to Oirat-Kalmyks in the Philadelphia diaspora. Together, we learned about the tradition of the Jangar epic from scholar Saglar Bougdaeva, the importance of Kalmyk music and dance from our local Kalmyk instructors, the process for seeking asylum and available resources in an ever-changing political climate with HIAS PA, how to navigate the US school system, and explored oral histories of the Kalmyk community in the US over the past 70 years and drawing connections from these stories to those of fellow marginalized communities. The workshop ended with a community-wide makers market where art, accessories, and clothing was available for purchase, representatives from Khurrals and Kalmyk businesses and organizations were present to talk about their projects to learn more about the breadth and depth of our local communities.
